Use Screenshots to Get Better Help from AI

Screenshots often work better than text when asking AI for help with error messages, charts, and UI problems. Learn when to screenshot vs copy-paste.

Why this matters

When you're stuck with a computer problem, your first instinct might be to type out a description for AI. But here's the thing: AI can actually "see" images now, and a screenshot often tells the whole story in ways that text simply can't. Whether it's a confusing error message, a chart you need explained, or handwritten notes you want to digitise, showing AI what you're looking at gets you better help, faster.

When screenshots work better than text

Error messages: Instead of typing "I got an error that says something about memory," screenshot the actual error. AI can read the exact message, see any error codes, and spot details you might miss.

Charts and graphs: Describing a chart is nearly impossible. A screenshot lets AI see the data, axes, legends, and trends all at once.

Handwritten notes: AI can read most handwriting and convert it to typed text, saving you hours of transcription.

Website or app problems: Rather than explaining "the button isn't working," show AI exactly what your screen looks like. It can spot layout issues, missing elements, or suggest what might be wrong.

Forms and documents: Need help filling something out? Screenshot it, and AI can explain each section and suggest what information goes where.

How to use screenshots with ChatGPT

Using screenshots with ChatGPT is surprisingly simple:

  • Take your screenshot using your usual method (Windows: Windows Key + Shift + S, Mac: Command + Shift + 4, phones: volume + power buttons)
  • Open ChatGPT in your browser or app
  • Click the attachment button (paperclip icon) next to where you type your message
  • Upload your screenshot and add a clear question like "What does this error mean?" or "Can you explain this chart?"
  • Be specific about what you need: "Help me fix this," "Explain what I'm seeing," or "Convert this handwriting to text"
  • When to stick with text instead

Screenshots aren't always the answer. Use text when:

  • You're sharing sensitive information (passwords, personal details)
  • The problem is conceptual rather than visual
  • You need to share a large amount of text that's already digital
  • You're asking about something that happened over time

Keep it focused: Crop your screenshot to show just the relevant area. Too much visual information can be distracting.

Add context: Even with a screenshot, a sentence explaining what you were trying to do helps AI give more targeted advice.

Try multiple angles: If one screenshot doesn't capture everything, take a few from different parts of your screen.

    Try it today

Next time you're stuck with a computer problem, resist the urge to type out a long explanation. Take a screenshot instead and ask ChatGPT what it sees. You'll be amazed how much more helpful the response becomes when AI can actually see what you're dealing with. Start with something simple – maybe that error message you've been ignoring, or ask it to explain a confusing graph you found online.
